The Wi-Fi generation — the most connected Tamagotchi ever made before Paradise
What Is It?
The Tamagotchi Uni was released in Japan on July 15, 2023, with a worldwide release following shortly after. It was the most technologically ambitious Tamagotchi ever made at the time — the first device in the franchise’s history to include built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.
That single feature changed everything. Where previous Tamagotchi devices required you to physically be near another player to connect, the Uni let you interact with players around the world from your couch. A shared online space called the Tamaverse — a metaverse-style environment — let you visit other players, share items, and see Tamagotchi from all over the globe living their lives in real time.
Key Features
Wi-Fi connectivity and the Tamaverse: The headline feature. Log in to the Tamaverse to visit other players’ spaces, share accessories, and participate in online events. For the first time in franchise history, your Tamagotchi was part of a global community rather than just a local one.
Full color touchscreen: The Uni features a bright, responsive touchscreen — a significant step up from the button-based navigation of older devices. Combined with the color display, it made the Uni feel genuinely modern.
Download codes: Similar to the Paradise’s shop code system, the Uni used download codes distributed through social media, merchandise, and events to unlock exclusive items and accessories.
Tamagotchi Plaza connectivity: The Uni connected with Tamagotchi Plaza, a Nintendo Switch game released in 2025, allowing players to exchange codes between devices and unlock exclusive items in both.
Customization: Players could dress their Tamagotchi in a wide variety of accessories and outfits, with new items distributed regularly through download codes and the Tamaverse.
Characters and Raising
The Uni features a cast of characters that will feel familiar to modern fans — Mametchi, Mimitchi, Kuchipatchi, and the rest of the core franchise cast are all present. Evolution is influenced by care quality in the traditional manner, with better care producing better-tier adults.
The Uni doesn’t have the same field-based evolution system as Paradise — it’s closer to the Connection era approach where your overall care level and some item interactions determine which adult you get. Simpler to navigate than Paradise, but with less strategic depth.
How It Compares to Paradise
The Uni and Paradise are philosophically different devices. The Uni leaned hard into connectivity and community — the Tamaverse was its defining feature and the reason to own it. Paradise pulled back from Wi-Fi entirely (no internet connectivity at all) and instead went deep on local physical connections, a four-field evolution system, and sheer character variety.
If you loved the social aspect of the Uni — visiting other players, seeing what they’re raising, participating in online events — Paradise will feel more solitary by comparison. If you found the Tamaverse interesting but wanted deeper raising mechanics, Paradise is the upgrade you were looking for.
Both are excellent modern Tamagotchi devices and complement each other well. Many players own both.
Is It Still Worth Getting?
Yes, with a caveat — the Tamaverse servers are still active as of 2025, but online features for discontinued devices don’t last forever. The Uni’s best features are tied to its Wi-Fi functionality, so get it sooner rather than later if you want the full experience.
The Uni is widely available new and secondhand and is one of the more affordable entry points into modern color-screen Tamagotchi.

Is It Worth Getting Today?
Yes, especially for newcomers. The Uni is the easiest modern Tamagotchi to live with — rechargeable, forgiving, and constantly refreshed with Wi-Fi events and downloads. If you want an online community and a touchscreen over deep raising mechanics, it is the pick. If you want the deepest game, look at Paradise instead.
Wi-Fi Setup — The #1 Connection Issue
The Tamagotchi Uni connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. It cannot see 5 GHz or 6 GHz networks at all — your phone and laptop may be on those bands even if they appear to work. This is the cause of the vast majority of connection failures.
Quick checklist:
- Your router must broadcast a 2.4 GHz network (most do, but many modern routers let you disable it)
- Stay within 2–3 meters of your router during initial setup
- WPA/WPA2/WPA3 passwords are supported; captive portals and enterprise networks are not
- Hidden SSIDs: go to Settings → Wi-Fi → NOT LISTED and scan two QR codes with your phone
- Android hotspot: disable mobile data on your phone first; use “BY DEVICE > AUTO” not “BY PHONE”

Official server support is confirmed through July 13, 2026. All basic care and device-to-device Connect still work offline if the servers go down.
Secret Characters
The Uni has four special adult characters that require specific conditions beyond standard care:
Shimashimatchi (male) / Yattatchi (female)
Require a physical device-to-device local Connect marriage (not Tamaverse) plus at least one DIY accessory crafted during the child or teen stage. Can evolve from any teen line. Common mistake: players try to obtain these via Tamaverse marriage — that route only produces standard adults.
Hypertchi (male) / Bubbletchi (female)
The rarest characters in the game. Requirements:
- Your current generation must be a multiple of 5 (gen 5, 10, 15, etc.)
- That generation must be born from a Tamaverse Tama Party marriage specifically — local Connect marriage on a gen-5 does NOT produce a rainbow egg
- A rainbow-striped egg at hatching confirms you’re on the eligible path (added in firmware v1.6.0)
- Hypertchi: additionally complete 3+ Tama Travel trips during child/teen stages
- Bubbletchi: additionally purchase 3+ Tama Fashion outfits during child/teen stages
Tips & Tricks
Care mistakes don’t reset between child and teen stages — they accumulate going into the adult evolution. Missing one care call as a child counts against your adult result.
Alternate evolution overrides can rescue an imperfect run: 3+ Tama Walks let you reach a better-care adult with 1–3 mistakes, as do 10+ Tama Delivery orders or 20+ perfect arcade scores (depending on your teen type). These aren’t optional extras — they’re the standard technique experienced players use.
Tama Walk accelerometer tip: The walk only requires any movement — gentle shaking, swinging on a lanyard, or ankle-wearing all work. The screen can be off. If there’s zero movement in the first minute, the walk auto-cancels with no reward.
Never feed cereal — every adult character dislikes it. It’s in the food menu but causes happiness loss regardless of personality.
Check personality early — personality is set permanently at hatching and determines which foods and accessories give happiness bonuses or penalties. Feeding a disliked food type wastes the feeding entirely.
Shop inventory resets 3 times daily (7 AM, 11 AM, 3 PM) and is globally synchronized by date — not randomized per device. Every Uni in the world sees the same shop on the same day.
Hidden boot menu: Hold A+C, then press the Reset pin on the back while continuing to hold A+C through the full startup jingle. Options include CONTINUE / RESET ALL / RESTORE VER (re-downloads firmware) / OFF (full power-down). This is also how to fully power off the device — not documented in the manual.

Common Beginner Mistakes
Using 5 GHz Wi-Fi. The Uni literally cannot see it. Must be 2.4 GHz.
Thinking care mistakes reset between stages. They don’t — they accumulate across child and teen into the adult evolution.
Feeding cereal. Every character dislikes it. Don’t feed it.
Not moving in the first minute of Tama Walk. The walk auto-cancels with no reward if the accelerometer detects zero movement in the opening 60 seconds.
Trying to get Shimashimatchi/Yattatchi via Tamaverse. These require local physical device-to-device Connect marriage, not Tamaverse.
Trying to get the rainbow egg via local Connect on gen 5. Only Tamaverse marriage on generation multiples of 5 produces the rainbow egg and enables Hypertchi/Bubbletchi.
Not checking personality early. It’s permanent and determines your entire feeding and accessory strategy for that generation.
Muting and missing care calls. Sound off = no beep alert. If you mute, check the screen frequently — a missed attention call within 15 minutes counts as a care mistake.
