Oyajitchi (Bill): How to Get the Tamagotchi Gen 1 Secret Character

Oyajitchi — called Bill on English-language Gen 1 units — is the one secret adult on the Tamagotchi Gen 1, and the most misunderstood unlock in the franchise. Most guides say “perfect care”. It’s the opposite: you unlock him by never disciplining your pet, then caring well for the adult that produces. Here’s the exact route on the re-release and on original 1997 hardware.

The Secret Character: Oyajitchi (Bill)

Gen 1 has one secret adult that most players never discover — called Bill in English releases and Oyajitchi in Japan. He’s a middle-aged salaryman in a suit with a permanent five-o’clock shadow. Getting him requires doing the opposite of everything the game seems to encourage.

How to unlock him:

  1. Never press the Discipline button at any point during the entire playthrough — not once. Your discipline meter must stay at 0% from Baby through Adult.
  2. This forces the Tamatchi teen (good teen) to evolve into Maskutchi — the masked adult — instead of Mametchi or Ginjirotchi.
  3. Maskutchi then automatically transforms into Oyajitchi/Bill around age 14–15 on the original hardware, or around age 10–12 on the re-release.

Common misconception: Many guides say “perfect care” leads to Oyajitchi. This is wrong. The mechanism is specifically zero discipline — the opposite of perfect discipline. You can have otherwise good care (feeding on time, playing the game) as long as you never press the discipline button.

On the re-release: The requirements are slightly relaxed on the 2017+ re-release. Maskutchi reached through any route can evolve into the secret character with sufficiently good adult care — the strict zero-discipline requirement is less absolute than on original 1996-97 hardware.

Oyajitchi/Bill can live to very old ages and is a beloved trophy character for completionists.

Step by Step on the Re-Release

  1. Hatch the egg and raise Babytchi and Marutchi normally — answer hunger and happy calls, lights off at bedtime, clean up poop. Keep care mistakes at 0–1 so you get Tamatchi at age 3.
  2. Never press the Discipline icon. When it calls for attention but refuses food and play, let the call expire. Your discipline meter stays at 0%.
  3. At age 6, Tamatchi becomes Maskutchi (0–2 care mistakes, 2+ discipline mistakes).
  4. Now give Maskutchi good adult care — feed on time, play the game, lights off at night. Around age 10–12 he transforms into Oyajitchi.

If you got Kuchitamatchi at age 3 you’ve had too many care mistakes — Maskutchi isn’t reachable from the poor-care teen, so you’ll need to start a new egg.
