Tamagotchi Pix (2021)

pix device

The camera generation — the first Tamagotchi with a built-in camera

What Is It?

The Tamagotchi Pix was released internationally in June 2021, making it one of the few modern Tamagotchi devices to receive a simultaneous worldwide release rather than launching in Japan first. Its defining feature was immediately obvious: a built-in camera on the front of the device that let you take photos, scan QR codes, and interact with your Tamagotchi through the camera feed in ways no previous device had attempted.

The Tamagotchi Pix Party followed in 2022 — a limited edition version of the same device with party and celebration theming, new shell designs, and some additional content. Mechanically identical to the original Pix.

Key Features

Built-in camera: The headline feature. You could scan QR codes to unlock items and content, take photos with your Tamagotchi, and use the camera for certain interactive activities. It added a layer of real-world interaction that felt genuinely novel for a handheld virtual pet.

QR code system: Items, food, and special content could be unlocked by scanning QR codes distributed through social media, merchandise, and events — the precursor to the shop code system used on the Uni and Paradise.

Color screen: Full color display, building on the color era that started with the Plus Color in 2008.

Cooking: The Pix introduced a cooking mini-game where you could prepare meals for your Tamagotchi using ingredients collected in-game. This mechanic carried forward into Paradise in a refined form.

Garden: Players could grow a virtual garden to produce food items for their Tamagotchi.

No infrared or Wi-Fi: The Pix is a fully standalone device. There’s no connecting to other players — the camera is the only external interaction system. This makes it a more solitary experience than the Connection era devices or the Uni.

Characters and Raising

The Pix features a roster of familiar franchise characters — Mametchi, Mimitchi, Kuchipatchi, Lovelitchi, and others. Evolution works similarly to the Connection era: overall care quality determines which adult you get, with different tiers of adults representing perfect care, moderate care, and neglect.

The cooking and gardening systems add more daily activities compared to older devices, giving you more to do than just feed and play. But the evolution system is straightforward compared to Paradise’s field and food-type matrix.

The Pix Party

The Pix Party is mechanically the same as the original Pix. It came in translucent and party-themed shells, included some exclusive content tied to the party theme, and was released as a limited edition for the holiday season. If you find one secondhand and the price is right, it’s a fun collectible version of the same device.

How It Compares to Paradise

The Pix and Paradise share some DNA — the cooking system in particular feels like a direct ancestor of Paradise’s cooking mechanic. But the Pix is a more casual device. The evolution system is less strategic, there’s no field system, no breeding, and no cross-device connectivity.

The camera gimmick was genuinely fun but also somewhat limited in practice — most players used it primarily for QR code scanning rather than the interactive camera activities.

If you want a lighter, more casual modern Tamagotchi that won’t demand you memorize food types and care mistake counts, the Pix is a great choice. If you want depth, go Paradise.

Is It Still Worth Getting?

Yes. The Pix is widely available secondhand at low prices, the QR code content is still circulating in the community, and the cooking and gardening systems hold up well. It’s a good entry point into modern color Tamagotchi without the complexity of Paradise or the online dependency of the Uni.

Is It Worth Getting Today?

Good for casual play and younger kids. The camera is genuinely fun — scan QR codes, cook by photographing real foods, and stage photos with your pet. But it is a large device, runs through AAA batteries quickly (use rechargeables), and is now a few years old. Its cooking and gardening systems went on to inspire Paradise.
